It’s been quiet on the western front the past week. many of the Spring 2013 fashion shows left something to be desired, until now: Dries Van Noten. Inspired by THE iconic image of the grunge era - Kurt Cobain play guitar in a flower dress - Dries Van Noten brought to life a collection that played upon the masculine / feminine dynamic, complete with a plaid organza work shirt and floral print pants.

Tempereley London showcased a certain Portofino / Sophia Loren chic with variations on sundresses and resortwear, though the clothes weren’t casual at all. In a palette of scarlet, pale china blue, white, navy, and black, there was a graphic delineation and simplicity to the collection. And, even when there was intense workmanship, all of the garments had a lovely ease to them. I can’t decide which I’d wear first.

The best show of New York Fashion Week! Ralph Lauren’s Spring 2013 collection scoured the world from the matadors of Spain to the Cafes of Paris to the reservations of the Western Plains. And even with it’s breadth, it still was resoundingly Ralph Lauren. Bravo!

For Spring 2013, Marc Jacobs took a significant turn from Fall 2012”s “plymouth rock meets urban street wear extravaganza” channeling instead the era of Andy Warhol. (Thank you Marc Jacobs for moving beyond over sized hats and pilgrim shoes.) This season the designer presented simple, clean silhouettes with sequins and geometric lines that pushed the envelope with exceptionally low waist lines.

BHLDN (Beholden) is the new bridal and special occasion shop launched by Urban Outfitters, which also owns Anthropologie and Free People. I discovered BHLDN while visiting Chicago a few weeks ago and was impressed by the quality of the merchandise (including Repetto ballet flats), the variety of price points (dresses from $200 to $5000), and the sophisticated space with white washed re-purposed wood. More Anthropologie than Urban Outfitters, BHLDN is a bit vintage and a bit ethereal. It’s a fun find, but only available online and in Chicago / Houston for now!

‘Schiaparelli and Prada’ at the MET ended a few weeks ago, but the coffee table book is almost as good. Both compare the work of two Italian fashion designers a century apart. From the NY Times: ‘Schiaparelli mentions that in her day, society women were often encountered seated at tables in cafes or restaurants, and that as a designer she was most interested in what was most visible in such situations: the body from the waist up. Ms. Prada, who had experienced hippie back-to-the-earthness along with the sexual revolution, was more focused on the lower limbs. By way of illustration the show gives us a selection — dense and vivacious — of Schiaparelli jackets and hats and Prada skirts and shoes.’ Although highlighting different areas of the body, both designers work within identical themes, including “naïf chic” - fabrics of printed circus animals and tropical fruits - and “ugly chic” - sweaters and menswear in earthy tones. It’s quite surprising that Prada is so similar to Schiaparelli actually.
